Abstract
During the past three decades, many techniques for evaluating solid film endurance (wear) life have been investigated. All are based on area, point, or line contact and vary only to the extent of the ingenuity of the “inventor.” Several of the testers and procedures have become industry “standards,” and, in fact, three have become ASTM standards. These standards will be reviewed, as will wear testing and techniques, as pertain to solid, thin film evaluations, in general.
