Abstract
The interaction of petroleum pitch/metal chloride and anthracene/metal chloride systems was investigated by high temperature ESR. The extent of the radical concentration increase in the pitch with strong Lewis acids such as SbCl3 and AlCl3 was much less than that with weak Lewis acids such as ZnCl2 and SnCl2. The ESR spectra with hyperfine couplings deduced from anthracene and strong Lewis acid systems at high temperatures were identified as anthracene cation radicals. However, the ESR hyperfine structures of the signals observed for the anthracene/ZnCl2 system were somewhat different from those observed for the anthracene/SbCl3 system. Keywords
