MENETRIER'S DISEASE OF THE STOMACH IN CHILDREN

Abstract
A brief review of all the reported cases of hypertrophic gastropathy (Menetrier's disease) in children and the report of 1 new case are presented. Its benign character and transitory nature are emphasized. A brief description of its clinical and pathologic characteristics is made. The possible etiologic factor precipitating the phenomena in children is discussed. It is quite possible that most cases of idiopathic hypoproteinemia previously reported in children in the absence of careful upper gastrointestinal and small bowel studies represent some form of proteinlosing gastropathy. It is hoped that the use of paper chromatography6 and careful gastrointestinal roentgenologic examinations will increase the recognition of hypertrophic gastropathy and aid in the further understanding of these phenomena in children.
