Abstract
A specific metabolic stimulant present in pituitary extracts increases O2 consumption in rabbits, depresses the R.Q., increases CO2 production, increases body temperature, decreases N metabolism. The active principle is thermostable, resistant to alkali and to pepsin, destroyed by trypsin, absorbed by charcoal. In these respects, and in its distr. in different parts of the pituitary and in its occurrence in extracts of various types, it resembles the melano-phore-expanding hormone. Active extracts have been prepared from ox, sheep and pig pituitaries. The active principle is present in both ant. and post. lobes, but has been found in highest conc. in pituitary colloid and in extracts of the pars intermedia. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
