Abstract
The screening-charge density and the potential matrix elements of a fixed charge in bismuth are calculated using a density-matrix approach. Numerical values of the charge density in the three principal crystal directions are obtained using the band parameters of Smith, Baraff, and Rowell. The resulting chargedensity oscillations are interpreted on the basis of the band structure of bismuth. Keywords
