Abstract
Agrostis L. (Poaceae), a genus of temperate regions throughout the world, is revised for New Zealand. Ten indigenous species of Agrostis are recognised, including A. magellanica shared with southern South America and the Kerguelen region, and A. muelleriana shared with Australia; the remaining eight species are endemic. A new alpine species, A. oresbia, is described, and a new name, A. personata, is provided for the entity previously recorded in New Zealand as A. canina, A. parviflora, A. perennans, and A. dyeri var. delicatior. Four naturalised species are recognised, the bent grasses of European origin. Comments on their agronomic importance and present distribution in the wild are included. Hybridism among the naturalised species of Agrostis is discussed, with information on the frequency and fertility of hybrids in New Zealand. Keywords
