DETAILED SEA-SURFACE TEMPERATURE ANALYSIS UTILIZING NIMBUS HRIR DATA

Abstract
A technique that reduces the effect of noise in the Nimbus High Resolution Infrared Radiometer (HRIR) data and that yields sea-surface temperatures free of cloud interference has been developed. It allows a spatial resolution of about 20 n.mi. and the resulting HRIR temperature pattern compares well with ground truth data. A l.0°C discrepancy was found between the modified HRIR data and the ground truth wherein the HRIR temperatures were lower than the ground truth values. HRIR data were corrected for attenuation by water vapor and carbon dioxide absorption.
