Monomode Fibre Modulators: Frequency And Polarisation State Control

Abstract
Two experimental fibre components are described which exploit the properties of highly birefringent monomode optical fibre. In the first the generation of a travelling ultra-sonic flexure wave on the fibre produces a frequency shift of the input optical signal. In the second a variable axial tension modulates the differential phase retardance between the two guided polarisation eigenmodes to produce an arbitrary output polarisation state from a linear input state (or vice versa) without loss of optical power.© (1987) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
