Massive Pulmonary Embolism without Infarction

Abstract
Four cases of embolism in the main pulmonary artery without infarction are described. These cases suggest that a “veiling” of the lung occurs on the affected side. The ischaemia with diminished or absent vascularisation resulting in a more translucent radiological picture as described by Westermark was not seen in our cases. The necessity for following up a larger series of cases paying particular attention to the degree of organisation or adherence of the embolus to the arterial wall appears desirable.
