Abstract
Details of the colour, protein and cation contents of 36 human cataractous lenses are presented. Although there was generally reasonable agreement between the increasing amount of insoluble material in each lens and deepening nuclear colour (Pirie Groups I-IV), wide variations in the values for ion and protein contents within any one group were observed. There was a good correlation between the increase in lens sodium and decrease in soluble protein and it is proposed that the Pirie classification scheme should be modified to allow for this cortical involvement.
