Abstract
The intraspecies genetic relatedness among strains of 2 established species of Acholeplasma was compared. Radiolabeled DNA probes were prepared from 3 strains of A. laidlawii and 2 strains of A. axanthum by using the nick translation method. The labeled DNA probes of these strains were hybridized to an excess of unlabeled DNA from 12 strains of A. laidlawii and 6 strains of A. axanthum, respectively. Nucleic acid hybridization analyses showed a wide variation among strains within each of the 2 established species, ranging from 48-100% homology. Thus, strains isolated from diverse hosts and habitats within a given species of Acholeplasma exhibit extensive genotypic variations. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
