Growth Inhibition of Escherichia coli in Staled Medium

Abstract
Broth which was treated, by exposure to preliminary growth of E. coli in Asheshov-type twin tubes, produced poorer growth of E. coli than untreated control medium. Inhibition, consisting of a decreased growth rate during the logarithmic growth phase with a smaller resulting population, could not be attributed to lack of nutrient materials present in beef extract and peptone, and the inhibiting substance was thermostable and dializable. Inhibition was non-specific since Eberthella typhosa and Staphylococcus aureus showed decreased growth similar to E. coli.
