Abstract
The methanol-HS-CoM methyltransferase system in extracts of autotrophically cultivated Methanosarcina barkeri undergoes a time-dependent (hysteretic) activation by ATP. Cell-free extracts incubated with Mg-ATP, and then exhaustively dialysed, exhibit substantial methyltransferase activity in the absence of added ATP, which is inhibited by the addition of Mg2+ to the reaction mixture.
