Progress toward a National Blood System

Abstract
Underlying the difficulties with the blood supply of the United States is a dispute between the American Association of Blood Banks and the American Red Cross over who shall control blood collection. Two basic philosophies of donor recruitment, one aimed at individuals and the other at communities, have complex sequelae. This dispute results in a mismatch between blood supply and use, marked by simultaneous waste and shortage of blood. These circumstances affect patient recipients of blood and conservation of the national blood resource.
