Abstract
A surface collection from the Phillips Spring Site, 23HI216, Missouri, was analyzed in an attempt to delineate activity areas. The techniques employed included inspection of distribution maps of artifact counts and principal components analysis, with analysis of the distributional patterning of the factor scores. Neither technique was able to do more than suggest that a pattern did exist. It is concluded that analyses using sophisticated statistical techniques require greater temporal control than is available for this surface collection, and that systematic, intensive surface collections may not always be as useful as had been thought, since they may not provide more information than a faster and less expensive surface grab sample.
