Straight-line soliton data transmissions over 2000 km at 20 Gbit/s and 1000 km at 40 Gbit/s using erbium-doped fibre amplifiers

Abstract
Soliton data signals at 20 and 40 Gbit/s have been successfully transmitted over 2000 and 1000 km, respectively, by using erbium-doped fibre amplifiers. Bit error rates of below 10−10 were obtained with 223 – 1 pseudorandom patterns. 40 Tbit/s km is the highest value yet reported in a straightline soliton transmission experiment.
