Abstract
The arteriovenous fistula has become the definitive approach for long-term access to the blood stream for haemodialysis with potential use in other chronic disorders. Access, however, must achieve certain criteria for adequate dialysis, which necessitates careful preoperative planning and subsequent care. This paper deals with some of the more important points in assessment, surgical technique and fistula maintenance, and discusses some of the problems commonly encountered. Keywords
