Abstract
A method of comparing chigger abundance is described. Eutrombicula al-freddugesi was abundant about the base of trees and scarce 5 or 6 ft. away; Acariscus masoni occurred in heaviest concs. near decaying wood or in open spaces covered with dead leaves. In control expts. with dusts, elemental sulfur appeared to be slightly superior to wettable sulfur. It reduced chigger populations to 9-17% of the original infestation in 1 day and further decline followed. All chiggers were eradicated in 8 days in 2 of 3 tests. No chiggers were found for 2 days in areas dusted with 5% dinitro-o-cresol or 2% DDT but a few reappeared after that length of time. Phenazine and diphenylamine dusts reduced chigger populations from 50 to 80% while cryolite was less effective. Results were similar against the two species of chiggers. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
