Abstract
We study the effect of Coulomb interactions on the photogenerated excitations in trans-polyacetylene. Both on-site and nearest-neighbor electron-electron interactions are added to the standard Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We find that oppositely charged soliton-antisoliton pairs form excitonlike bound states. Our theoretical predictions for low-lying excited states are compared with observed photoinduced absorption spectra and provide a possible explanation of these experiments. Keywords
