Abstract
Descriptive markup languages provide a mechanism for specifying the structure of a document. The basic premise of the work described here is that structure is an important characteristic of a document and is something more than a layout specification. For this reason, it appears important that retrieval tools should be developed which can take advantage of structural knowledge. In this paper, a query language is described which provides such a capability. The underlying implementation strategy is also discussed. Keywords
