Abstract
L-Rhamnose inhibits approximately 50 to 66% of the total growth of S. typhosa strain 0-901 in a mineral medium with casein hydrolyzate as sole C and energy source. Experiments suggest that growth on casein hydrolyzate may be divided into 2 parts: (a) growth on L-serine, which is not inhibited by L-rhamnose; and (b) growth on L-glutamate, DL-aspartate, L-proline, and for the most part L-threonine, which is inhibited by rhamnose. The effect of the addition of L-rhamnose to a culture in the phase of growth susceptible to the rhamnose inhibition is not detectable until after 1 hr. subsequent to the addition of L-rhamnose. During this period, induced synthesis of L-rhamnose isomerase and probably L-rhamnulokinase occurs, and rhamnulose accumulates in the culture medium. Keywords
