Abstract
Mass production of mobile communication radios requires an electronics board with a minimum number of components, optimized cost and reliable performance within production tolerances. Reduction of the number of battery cells to 3 or 4 requires ICs with 3 V supply and low power consumption. The one-chip 2 GHz single superhet receiver for digital data transmission in a 7.5 GHz bipolar process is optimized for low power consumption and a dynamic range of at least 70 dB at the RF signal input. The IC is suitable for both radios and base stations of digital mobile radio, especially cordless phone systems up to 2 GHz including the Digital European Cordless Telephone (DECT), wireless LAN systems and any other systems using incoherent FSK modulation. Previously-published receiver circuits are not characterized for 2 GHz applications, can not handle 11O MHz IF or 1 Mb/s data rate, or do not have a comparable level of integration. The IC presented here consists of a 2 GHz RF mixer, a 40 to 115 MHz limiter with a radio signal strength indicator (RSSI), an incoherent FM demodulator, a sample-and-hold off-set compensation circuit and a baseband filter.> Author(s) Thomas, V.
