Abstract
After the addition of partially purified hemolysin from Listeria monocytogenes (9-125) on L-M strain of mouse cells cultured in medium 199, the following cellular alterations were observed. Within 20 minutes of hemolysin addition the dense appearance of the cell was decreased in some cells. Most granules were retained, some being more dense with increase in the inclusions and vacuoles in the cytoplasm. Later, the cytoplasmic membrane became irregular, then it ruptured and the cell died. The effects observed on the cellular response to hemolysin are markedly different from those obtained either with the neutralized hemolysin or the BSS during the same period of time.
