Influence of instructions on degree of shape constancy.

Abstract
SS WERE INSTRUCTED TO RESPOND EITHER TO REAL SHAPE (OBJECT INSTRUCTIONS), HOW THE STIMULUS LOOKED (APPARENT INSTRUCTIONS), OR THE STIMULUS SILHOUETTE (IMAGE INSTRUCTIONS). 3 GROUPS OF 15 SS WERE USED, EACH WITH ONLY 1 KIND OF INSTRUCTION. THE 4 STANDARD STIMULI (SS) WERE COMPLEX AND UNFAMILIAR. S MANIPULATED THE SHAPE OF THE VARIABLE STIMULUS (VS) TO EQUAL THAT OF THE TURNED SS. RESULTS SUGGEST THAT, IN A NORMAL SITUATION, (1) OBJECT INSTRUCTIONS PRODUCE NEARLY PERFECT CONSTANCY, (2) THE IMAGE INSTRUCTION CANNOT ELIMINATE CONSTANCY, AND (3) THE CONVENTIONAL APPARENT INSTRUCTION IS AMBIGUOUS, RESULTING IN EITHER AN OBJECT OR IMAGE SET.
