Self-restraining and Condom Use Behaviours: The HIV/AIDS Prevention Challenges in Tanzanian Schools

Abstract
Of the 528 nonvirgin students, 61.5% had sexual partners at the time of the study. However, only 21.5% of the nonvirgins reported use of condoms at their most recent sexual experience. Those who perceived themselves vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and the females were unlikely to have restrained from sexual relationship. Brief periods of dating before intercourse and early sexual debut were not associated with increased condom use. Overall, involvement in sexual behaviour was linked to misconceptions about chances of being HIV infected, less value on one's religion, inadequate knowledge of a sexual partner and being a female student. Measures that prevent students from the consequences of being sexually active are advocated.
