A case-control assessment of risk factors for Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis

Abstract
A matched-pair comparison of 50 cases of Haemophilis influenzae type b meningitis and healthy controls in Seattle, Washington, USA identified daycare attendance as a significant risk factor (0.01–3 eight hour days per week, OR=2.69; >3 eight hour days per week, OR=4.72) and breast-feeding (1–9 months OR=0.38; >9 months OR=0.12) as protective against this disease. In view of lack of accessibility of the new efficacious vaccine to some populations, awareness of the risk factors for this disease is still important for the development of alternative health care strategies.
