Abstract
In this chapter the author demonstrates the development of the psycho-analytical theory of paranoia in relation to homosexuality. He describes a manifest homosexual and a latent homosexual patient, who both developed paranoia when the defensive function of the homosexuality failed. The author then describes the importance of projective processes in homosexuals. He also traces the origin of the mechanism of projective identification to its root, namely to the earliest infantile impulses of forcing the self into the mother. The author also discusses the interrelations between homosexuality and paranoia, paranoid anxiety and narcissism. The early fixation of the paranoiac has been stressed by many authors, as for example by Abraham and later on by Bychowski and Holstijn; but it was mainly Melanie Klein who insisted on the primary importance of this early fixation. Since 1919 she has gradually developed her views concerning the early stages of infantile development.
