Abstract
The behavior of alkaline and acid phosphatase during the initial stages of development of the mesonephros and metanephros in man is reported. The activity rate and the localization of the 2 enzymes considered appears to be quite different in the initial stages of the urinary system. The alkaline enzyme seems to have an important role during the process of histological differentiation. Once the histological differentiation is complete, the alkaline phosphatase is shown to be located in its definitive position in the adult. Therefore we are taken to think that this enzymatic activity of the initial developmental period has a meaning quite different from that of the definitive adult kidney. The acid phosphatase is found also to be present in the different initial stages of the kidney. At the definitive period and the adult period the acid phosphatase is found to be everywhere. Contrary to the alkaline phosphatase it does not disappear anywhere. Therefore, the possibility exists that the alkaline phosphatase group has a different meaning from that of the acid phosphatase group.
