Preventing Death From Incompatible Transfusions

Abstract
Many deaths from incompatible hemolytic blood transfusions can be prevented if recognized and treated swiftly. To check quickly for hemolysis, draw blood, check plasma for visible hemolysis, and promptly do a Coombs test and detèrmine the plasma hemoglobin level. Using these means, compare post-transfusion with pretransfusion specimens. If tests indicate hemolysis after transfusion, immediately infuse mannitol into patient.
