Fatty Acid Composition of Adipose Tissue in Normal and Abnormal Subjects

Abstract
The fatty acid composition of buttock fat, as obtained by needle biopsy, from normal male and female subjects and from patients with coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypothyroidism has been determined by gas liquid chromatography. A sex difference was demonstrated in the fatty acid composition of adipose tissue from normal male and female subjects. The biological significance of this is obscure. The adipose tissue fatty acids of patients with coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypothyroidism are similar to those of normal subjects of the same sex except for some minor differences, which may or may not be significant.
