The Preparation and Characterization of Some Phosphinoacetic Acids, Salts, and Esters

Abstract
A general method is outlined for the preparation of compounds containing the -P(CH2COOY)n grouping, where Y = alkyl group, H, or Na and n = 1–3. This method is based on the methathesis reaction between esters of trialkylstannylacetic acids and phosphorus compounds containing a P[sbnd]Cl bond. In particular, this paper reports the synthesis of the compounds (C6H5)3-n P(CH2COOY)n where n = 1–3. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, melting and/or boiling points, and infrared and proton and phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data. Protonation constants for (C6H5)2 PCH2COOH and C6H5P(CH2COOH)2 were determined in ethanol-water and water, respectively. Synthesis and characterization of (C6H5)3-n P(O) (CH2COOCH)2 are reported also.
