Abstract
The interdependence of material structure, electrochemical parameters and the response of a material to the application of stress can produce slow crack growth by a number of different mechanisms. The recognition of the importance of such factors as environment composition, especially within the confines of a pit or crack, and of plasticity, especially in relation to the rate at which deformation presents bare metal at the tips of cracks, is vital if reproducible data are to be obtained. Keywords
