Abstract
The electron‐impact ionization‐efficiency curves (I.E.) of Group VI metal carbonyls and of their fragments show that competition can occur between different ionization and fragmentation processes. By analyzing these curves, the whole decomposition scheme of W(CO)6 has been obtained, although the processes involved happen too quickly to give metastable ions. A possibility of calculating the fragmentation probabilities pi as a function of electron energy is shown; for W(CO)6, this gives the information that all the pi have a similar trend in agreement with the proposed decomposition scheme involving only successive CO losses. Keywords
