Abstract
The apparatus is described and measurements are given of net CO2 exchange of shoots of Lolium perenne, Trifolium repens, Lycopersicon esculentum, Cucurbita maxima, Xanthium orientale, Chionochloa rubra, and Celmisia spectabilis at various light intensities. The maximum rates at a photosynthetic irradiance of 300 W.m−2 ranged from 35 mg CO2.g dry weight−1.hr−1 for the first three species down to 5 mg.g−1.hr−1 for the last two, which are indigenous alpine species. The relationship between the species was altered when rates of exchange ware expressed per unit leaf area or unit projected leaf area. Keywords
