Significance of local brittle zones to structural behaviour

Abstract
An extensive research programme, sponsored by several industrial companies, has been carried out to investigate the factors controlling the observed toughness properties of heat affected zones (HAZs) and, specifically, the toughness behaviour of large structures. Normalised and high strength steel grades were tested using conventional crack tip opening displacement and wide plate methods. Fracture initiation in both steels was found to be very sensitive to fatigue crack location. Crack arrest occurred in the fine grain HAZs of bevel edge welds. This observation is significant, because most fabrication welds contain bevel edges. Local strain and hardness measurements in the HAZ suggested that susceptibility to brittle fracture was influenced by the relative strength of the weld metal, HAZ, and parent plate. MST/1789Keywords
