Abstract
AN article by Engel et al. on page 646 of this issue of the Journal illustrates a new type of therapy that is commonly called biofeedback. This article, as well as a few others in the literature, describes careful clinical trials that have yielded promising enough results to merit additional trials by other investigators on larger samples of patients. Unfortunately, as frequently happens with a new technic, reports by the popular media, and also by salesmen for do-it-yourself equipment, have presented hopeful expectations that run far ahead of the proved facts.
