Abstract
Porphyra is a little known genus in the American North Atlantic; only 3 spp. are referred to that region, 2 of them to the North Carolina coast [USA] (P. leucosticta and P. umbilicalis). Examination of abundant material from North Carolina does not confirm the presence of either species. The particular features of the examined material appear to be reasonable basis for recognition of 2 new species. P. carolinensis sp. nov. is monostromatic, monoecious, contains 1 plastid per cell and was the first reported American North Atlantic species with a microscopically dentate margin. The other new species (P. rosengurttii ) is monostromatic, contains one plastid per cell, lacks a dentate margin and thas unusual reproductive units. Other references to P. leucosticta and P. umbilicalis for certain other locations along the American North Atlantic should be re-examined.
