Abstract
Extensive deficiencies exist in the physical facilities needed to provide reasonably adequate health services, such as hospitals, health centers, and laboratories. The need is most acute in rural areas. A postwar hospital and health center construction program, supervised by the U. S. Public Health Service, is proposed, to include grants-in-aid to states by the federal government after the state has made a study of its resources and needs, adopted a master plan to meet those needs, and passed the necessary legislation to carry out this program. The U. S. Public Health Service would also assist financially with the state studies. Hospital service would be organized on a regional basis and in rural areas the hospital, health dept., and offices of physicians and dentists should be in the same building with the health officer possibly as director of the combined health services. This close co-ordination of all health facilities and services in the community will probably be recommended by the Commission on Hospital Care which is now making a study of the nation''s hospital resources and needs.
