Abstract
Measurements of velocity dispersions for 32 galaxies, most of them elliptical, are presented. These are compared with several other recent efforts. The Faber-Jackson (1976) correlation between velocity dispersion and absolute magnitude is discussed. Mass-to-light ratios for 17 of the galaxies are determined. The effects of anisotropic velocity dispersion tensors on the computed mass-to-light ratios are analyzed, and the dependence of mass-to-light ratios on absolute magnitude is considered.
