Abstract
The evidence for and nature of world poverty are examined, and their incidence in the UK and more specifically Glasgow demonstrated. This is then developed into a discussion of the meaning of and implications for information deprivation within the context of the developing information society and knowledge economy. UK Government initiatives to eliminate social exclusion are examined and the pivotal role of libraries and of the library and information profession in co‐operation are discussed. Some specific initiatives for virtual universities and libraries are put forward. Keywords
