Abstract
Empirical studies using psychological tests for the detection and early identification of human drug abusers were summarized. Although the emphasis was on personality testing, intelligence and special aptitude tests were included. Psychological testing was not successful in differentiating drug abusers from other sampled groups. The ARCI [Addiction Research Center Inventory] and MMPI [Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory] personality tests showed potential, but their validity remains to be fully demonstrated. Factors for their lack of success included subjects with different response sets and in specific institutionalized settings. Recommendations for additional research in noninstitutional environments were discussed.
