Abstract
This article presents an overview of smart structures research and development activities in Japan reported mainly between 1992 and 1996 and a brief description of the recent situation in the smart structures research circle. Mention will be made of investigations on the vibration, shape, and motion controls of space structures, vibration suppression of substructural elements and smart reinforced composites, shape memory alloys, design approaches, etc, focusing on new aspects and ideas. Keywords
