Abstract
A direct solution is given to the problem of determining the interaction energy associated with a slit crack in an arbitrarily anisotropic solid. The method of solving the problem is basically due to Eshelby so that the crack is regarded as the appropriate limit of an ellipsoid. An apparent discrepancy between the results given here and some earlier work of Stroh (1958) is identified and resolved. Keywords
