A titration method for the determination of carbon dioxide in beer is described. A sample, to which excess alkali has been added, is titrated with hydrochloric acid using Phenolphthalein as indicator. Then, after adding an excess of acid, the carbon dioxide is removed by boiling and the sample titrated with alkali using the same indicator. The error does not exceed 0·5% when normal amounts of carbon dioxide are determined. The method is rapid and is simpler than previous methods.
