Abstract
Hypothalamic stimulation through implanted electrodes in cats when paired with a tone will subsequently produce an avoidance response (jumping a hurdle) when the tone is sounded alone. "The directional and motivational effects of conventional aversive drive-arousing techniques were compared with the central stimulation technique viewed as a drive-arousing operation." The latter technique as opposed to the conventional procedure produces no pain cues. Keywords
