Inflammatory stenosis of the esophagus following non gastric surgery

Abstract
The case histories of two women are discussed who developed a stricturing refluxesophagitis atter major non gastric surgery. Esophagitis developed in one case after a 9 day's indwelling nasogastric tube, in the other after forcious vomiting postoperatively. According to literature stenosing esophagitis after non gastric surgery is a rare event. The etiology is unknown, but previous cardia incompetence might be important. Patients with an indwelling nasogastric tube should be adviced to avoid supine and observe sitting position during sleep. Deux observations de maladie peptique de l'œsophage survenant chez deux femmes après chirurgie majeure non gastrique, sont relatées. Une œsophagite s'est développée dans un des cas, neuf jours après la mise en place d'une sonde nasogastrique. Dans l'autre cas, l'œsophagite s'est développée à la suite d'intenses vomissements post-opératoires. La littérature parle exceptionnellement d'œsophagite sténosante après chirurgie non gastrique. On en ignore l'étiologie, mais un trouble préalable du cardia peut avoir son importance. On devrait recommander au patient porteur d'une sonde naso-gastrique d'éviter le décubitus, et de garder la position assise pendant le sommeil.
