THE EFFECT OF ANOXEMIA ON THE DIGESTIVE MOVEMENTS OF THE STOMACH

Abstract
Gastrograph experiments on 14 barbitalized dogs showed that anoxemia of sufficient grades causes an inhibition of the digestive movements of the stomach as evidenced by a constant decrease in the amplitude of contraction and a frequent fall in tone. A plausible explanation of the mechanism is a sensitization of the sympathetics by the rise in blood pH concomitant with the hyperventilation of the early stages of anoxemia. The results are a partial repro duction of the clinical picture of the gastro-intestinal upsets in cardiac disease.
