Abstract
Health problems are an unwelcome accompaniment to advancing age for the majority of older people. Most suffer from a variety of symptoms (Brody & Kleban, 1981; Brody, Kleban, & Moles, 1983; Cicirelli, 1982b) and at least one chronic disease. An estimated 1.4 million elderly Americans had disabilities severe enough to warrant nursing home care in 1985, while another 5.4 million received care in the community (Day, 1986). Another study (Verbrugge, 1983) indicated that 43% of men and 35% of women over age 65 were limited in activity by chronic illness.
