Abstract
An optical model is applied to a quantum well resonant tunnelling diode, in which the effect of scattering can be taken account by introducing an absorption coefficient alpha . In the limit of an opaque barrier the transient time and peak-to-valley current ratio are determined by alpha and the width of the quantum well. The numerical estimates of these quantities are shown to be consistent with the experimental values obtained by Sollner and co-workers.Keywords
