A Speech Aid for Velopharyngeal Incompetency

Abstract
This paper presents a clinical procedure for the use of the LPE palatal exerciser in the treatment of velopharyngeal incompetency. Background information is given on the causes, and the surgical and prosthetic means of treating, this problem. The differences in the two types of LPE exercisers and the criteria for their use are discussed. Instructions for the patient’s use of the exerciser are given. The physical changes in the oropharyngeal area that the LPE can produce are described and demonstrated with cephalometric speech roentgenograms of four patients.
